We are pleased to invite you to join our new lecture series exploring the rich and multifaceted history of the Gulf region. In this inaugural session, Maryam Al-Mutawa, Head of Collection Access at the Heritage Library, will introduce the central themes of the series. This will be followed by a lecture by Dr. Allen Fromherz, Professor of Gulf History and Mediterranean History and Director of the Middle East Studies Center at Georgia State University, which will focus on the historical significance of the Gulf as a center of global activity prior to the discovery of oil. The lecture will also shed light on the many unique aspects of Gulf culture, trade and society over thousands of years.

Join noted historian Anita Burdett for a two-day immersive workshop on historical collections and oral history best practices. Participants will explore methods for preserving historical documents, managing digital coolections and conducting ethical oral history interviews. Through hands-on exercises and case studies, attendees will learn strategies for organizing collections, ensuring accessibility and maintaining authenticity.

Between the mid-18th and early 19th centuries, European explorers launched expeditions across the Middle East and North Africa, collecting scientific data and offering new perspectives on these regions. Funded by European governments, institutions and individuals, these missions were driven by a mix of scientific curiosity and imperial ambitions—political, cultural and commercial. Many of these journeys were later published in Europe as travelogues, documenting the explorers’ remarkable experiences.
