Spying on Whales

2020.3.8 18:00

Special Events Area

It’s easy to see why whales have captured the human imagination. Operating at the furthest edge of physiological extremes, their mysterious lives beneath the observable ocean surface can make whales seem otherworldly; yet, in their undeniable intelligence and social nature, we also recognize something of ourselves. To really understand whales, we must dig into their fascinating evolutionary history and search for insights about their place in past environments. With knowledge of past whale worlds, we can assess the current challenges that whales face and work to protect their place in the oceans of the future.

Dr. Nick Pyenson, Curator of Fossil Marine Mammals at the US National Museum of Natural History and author of the book Spying on Whales, will share his research about whales.
