SUMMARY:DLME: The Strength\, Capacity and Promise of Digital Libraries
DESCRIPTION:The Digital Library of the Middle East (DLME) was created in response to threats to cultural heritage from political violence and unrest in the Middle East and North Africa. The DLME quickly evolved and today is an open-source platform that ensures that copies of objects are not just preserved\, but also accessible to the global community\, facilitating research and learning while also helping to fight trafficking of cultural heritage items by centralizing metadata and provenance of hundreds of thousands of digital assets. For centuries\, Qatar has been a crossroads between Africa\, Europe\, the Middle East and the Far East\, and as such\, its heritage items trace global social\, economic\, scientific and religious development. Qatar National Library is a founding member of the DLME\, and is helping to fulfill the DLME’s mission through the digitization of its extensive Heritage Library collection. The DLME embodies the state-of-the-art in open digital library innovation and\, with the support of institutions such as the Library\, has the potential to be one of the most valuable and rich heritage portals globally.\nIn this lecture\, Dr. Charles Henry\, President of the Council on Library and Information Resources\, will discuss digital libraries such as the DLME and the ways they can make information more accessible. \nDate: 30 October 2019\nTime: 10:00 – 11:15 AM\nLanguage: English and Arabic\nTarget Audience: Librarians\, archaeologists\, museum directors and the general public\nSeats are limited\, please click the button below to register.
