SUMMARY:Seeing Yourself in History with Community-Based Archives: On Building the South Asian American Digital Archive
DESCRIPTION:QNL is hosting a UCLQ lecture on community-based archives.\nIn 2008\, two librarians—Michelle Caswell and Samip Mallick—noticed that no archival repository in the US was systematically collecting records documenting the rich and diverse stories of South Asian immigrants. In response to this archival absence\, they co-founded the South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA) (http://www.saada.org)\, a freely accessible online archive that\, a decade later\, is now the world’s largest repository of records documenting South Asian American history. In this lecture\, Caswell will discuss the growing community archives phenomena\, drawing on lessons learned from the building of SAADA.\nDate: 20 March 2018\nTime: 5:00 - 6:00 PM\nLanguage: English and Arabic\nTarget Audince: Public\nSeats are limited.
