Himaya Project Lecture Series: Illicit Circulation of Documentary Heritage in the Maghreb and Community of Sahelo States

2020.9.13 16:00

Online via Microsoft Teams

For centuries, the Arab and Middle East region has been a melting pot of civilizations, which have produced many tangible artifacts with historical, spiritual and aesthetic values, not to mention the pride and respect of their owners and custodians. For several years, the trafficking and smuggling of heritage items from libraries and archives has been rising. In the MENA and West and Central Africa region, this phenomenon is greater due to conflicts and instability.

In its role as the IFLA PAC Preservation and Conservation Center for Arab Countries and the Middle East, the Library launched Himaya, a project to support the efforts to counter the trafficking and illegal circulation of the documentary heritage in the region. An important goal of the project will be to create strong engagement between international agencies and regional organizations to protect documentary heritage and counter the trafficking of items.

This panel will discuss the issues surrounding trafficking and illegal circulation, as well as the Himaya project.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Alsharqi Dahmali, Member of the Advisory Council of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), Morroco
  • Stephane J. Ipert, Director of the IFLA PAC at the Library

Moderator:

  • Maxim Nasra, Book Conservation Specialist at the Library
