The course will introduce the vast field of traditional architecture in the MENA region through the filter of technical, architectural and spatial solutions that allow inhabitants to respond effectively to sometimes severe climatic constraints on the one hand, and to contemporary needs in matter of comfort on the other.
The course will address in particular questions of definition, the relationship of the site and local materials, and the range of associated traditional typologies and techniques making it possible to offer environmental comfort for humans.
Among the topics covered in this course cycle will be:
- Traditional architecture and its issues and materials
- Traditional typologies and techniques: Forms, techniques and construction materials
- Traditional means of managing and improving comfort: Shade, ventilation, insulation and water
- Case studies from geographic and geo-climatic zones in North Africa, Egypt, the Middle East, Turkey, the Arabian Gulf and Iran
