Western Travelers and the Image of the Other Through the Heritage Library Collection: A Panel Discussion

This panel discussion will explore the famous names that have marked travel literature and their itineraries, discoveries and contributions to the knowledge of the “other.”

Travel literature opens new horizons to better understand the social and political history of the Gulf region and Qatar in particular. Special attention will be given to the history of Qatar as described by these travelers, as well as to the question of how we can read and rediscover Qatari society through their writings.

The panelists are:

  • Mohammed Hammam Fakri, Heritage and Rare Books Advisor at the Library 
  • Dr. Youssef Al Abdulla, Professor of History at Qatar University
  • Dr. Mustafa Stiti, Researcher Specialist in Ottoman and Turkish Studies

The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Moez Dridi, Senior Archivist at Qatar National Library.
