Come and learn about the spice routes from Dr. Idham Bachtiar Setiadi. The spice routes were a global historical phenomenon that connected regions and various aspects of life around the world. Developed during the first millennium CE and reaching their zenith in the second, the spice routes were the precedent of today’s global economy. Today, the importance of the spice routes can be compared to the shipping of oil and gas, with the main differences being that neither its seaways nor its ships served a singular purpose and that its evolution was cultural rather than technological.
This talk will investigate interregional connections and how they played out in different places. Understanding the dynamics of the spice routes might help to rethink interconnectivity globally since they provide both a subject and a platform for considering our relationships with nature and with each other
Speaker: Dr. Idham Bachtiar Setiadi heads the Indonesian Association of Anthropologists and is vice chairperson of Indonesia’s Spice Routes Committee (2020). He now leads the recently established Suar Bahri Kultura Foundation to revitalise maritime cultures.
