Recitation Session of Early Qur’anic Manuscripts

2022.4.13 21:30

Online via Zoom with Live Stream via the Library’s YouTube Channel

In this session, participants can recite the Qur’an from manuscripts that were used by the tābi‘ūn and early Muslims who lived in the first and second Hijri centuries and afterward. Those manuscripts moved between libraries and collections over hundreds of years and were read by worshipers in the Two Holy Mosques and the mosques of Damascus, Baghdad, Cordoba and Cairo.

Join us in this interactive virtual session in which participants read the Qur’an remotely through color digital images of several early Qur’anic parchments written in Hijazi and Kufic scripts without dots or diacritics or with inconsistent partial dots and diacritics.

This session will be valuable and enjoyable for researchers and the public alike. The session is interactive communication between participants and the original copies of the Holy Qur’an. Manuscript copies of the Qur’an form a continuous chain of links, beginning with Qur’anic manuscripts of the third Caliph 'Uthman ibn 'Affan at one end, and these Mushafs that we have in our hands today at the other end, thus forming a link extending over hundreds of years through these handwritten copies, reinforced by the oral narration of the Qur’anic recitation.

The session’s recitation will be moderated by Professor Ahmed Khaled Shukri, professor of Quranic Studies at Qatar University. The session will be joined by Ahmed Shaker, Researcher in Qur'anic manuscripts, and founder of the Qur'an Manuscripts Initiative, and Mahmoud Zaki, Manuscripts Specialist at the Library.

Marking the Library’s celebration of the "Arabic Manuscript Day," the session is part of our series of practical sessions titled "Readings from Qatar National Library Manuscript Collection" and our other activities of the holy month of Ramadan.

The event will be conducted online via Zoom in Arabic, and live-streamed via the Library’s YouTube Channel.
