What is codicology and manuscript studies? Which subjects are most studied in the field? What are the latest developments in studying Islamic manuscript culture? What are the current resources and research literature?
These and many other questions about Islamic manuscript culture are at the heart of a lecture series organized jointly by the Library and the Center for Manuscript Studies at Fatih Sultan Mehmed Waqf University in Istanbul, bringing together renowned international experts in Islamic codicology and manuscript studies to hold monthly talks and address scholars and the general public alike.
In our August lecture, Tamer El-Gebali, scholar of Arabic codicology and lecturer at the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts in Cairo, will talk about "Arabic Transcription Traditions". The lecture presents a theoretical and applied framework for the most important traditions followed by the copyists of Arabic manuscripts, which researchers usually come across in manuscripts they study or consult. Al-Gabali will also present dozens of examples of manuscripts to explain how researchers can benefit from such findings. The manuscripts will be presented and discussed within their various textual making environment context.
The event will be conducted online via Zoom in Arabic, with simultaneous interpretation provided in English, and live-streamed via the Library’s YouTube channel.
