Philharmonic at the Library - “Unravel”: Music and Visual Art

2022.5.26 18:30

Special Events Area

“Unravel” is a unique project that combines music and visual art.

Created and executed by Mariya Medvedeva, this project represents the effects of music on perception and the artist's inner imagination visualized onto canvas.

Part one: Unravel the artist's vision of the present moment.

Inspired by a musical performance, Medvedeva created a series of portraits of the musicians on stage, capturing the moment. The audience at this event will simulataneously experience the interaction between the musicians on stage, their music and presence, and how they become part of art.

A string quartet performs music by:

  1. Massenet. “Meditation” (from the opera “Thaïs”)
  2. Debussy. “Moonlight” (“Clair de Lune”)
  3. Faure. “After a Dream” (“Après un Rêve”)
  4. Saint- Saens. “The Swan” (from the “Carnival of the Animals”)

Musicians

Aura Lorena Manescu (violin),

Mariya Medvedeva (violin),

Andrea Mereuta (viola),

Hassan Moatz (cello)

Part two: Unravel the creator’s vision.

The Musicians of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra perform the “Mother Goose Suite" by Maurice Ravel alongside visuals created by Medvedeva.

Ravel wrote his music based on the children's fairy tales of Charles Perrault, Marie-Catherine, Madame d'Aulnoy, and Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. The music inspired Medvedeva to create a body of artwork. The pieces present her adult interpretation of the magical characters from these fairy tales and her visual interpretation of this classical music.

  1. “Mother Goose Suite”
  2. “Pavane of the Sleeping Beauty” is presented with an art work and a short video. The main character is living as if in a dream. She tries to wake up to start her life anew.
  3. “Tom Thumb”
  4. “Little Ugly Girl, Empress of the Pagodas”
  5. “Conversation of Beauty and the Beast”
  6. “The Fairy Garden“
